What's a Router?
Main objective: Routing.
There are two types of routings:
You just bought your router:
– you take it out of the box
– you connect to the equipment (see article start with cisco)
– you are asked for a password…
The first thing to do is remove the basic configuration of our router.
What for? Because it is imperative to leave on a blank configuration !!!!!!!
Step 1: Log
When our router came out of the factory, it was assigned a default configuration. To connect to the equipment, use the following identifiers:
Step 2: Clear configuration
This configuration must be erased:
Router enable Router write erase Erasing the nvram filesystem will remove all configuration files! Continues? [confirm] [OK] Erase of nvram: complete %SYS-7-NV-BLOCK-INIT: Initialized the geometry of nvram Router reload System configuration has been modified. Save? [yes/no]:no Proceed with reload? [confirm]
Your router will restart and ask you this question:
--- System Configuration Dialog --- Would you like to enter the initial dialog configuration?[yes/no] No.
You have to say no!
What for? Because you are a competent network administrator:)
If you answer yes, the router will ask you several questions to generate a basic configuration… But we don't need him!
Step 1: Renaming our router
enable router router configures terminal router (config) - hostname RTR-001 RTR-001 (config)
Step 2: Put an IP address on a port
RTR-001 (config) - FastEthernet interface 0/0 RTR-001 (config-if) no shutdown RTR-001 (config-if) - description VERS-RTR-002 RTR-001 (config-if) ip address 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0 RTR-001 (config-if) RTR-001 (config) - FastEthernet interface 0/1 RTR-001 (config-if) no shutdown RTR-001 (config-if) - description VERS-RTR-003 RTR-001 (config-if) ip address 10.10.20.1 255.255.255.0 RTR-001 (config-if)
Let's look at this in detail:
In order to set up a port, you have to put yourself on the port in question.
RTR-001 (config) - FastEthernet interface 0/0
By default, all ports in our router are shutdown, so we'll turn on our port with the command:
RTR-001 (config-if) no shutdown
The description lets you know where our port is connected.
RTR-001 (config-if) - description VERS-RTR-002
And finally, set up the IP address on the port in question. You have to tell him his IP address as well as his sub-network mask.
RTR-001 (config-if) ip address 10.10.10.1 255.255.255.0
Your router is called RTR-001.
The FastEthernet 0/0 interface has the address 10.10.10.1.
The FastEthernet 0/1 interface has the address 10.10.20.1.
Your router is therefore able to have the 10.10.10.0/24 network discussed with the 10.10.20.0/24 network.
And to join the other networks? How does he do it?
Thanks to the routing!
So I'll give you an appointment on the static routing article to see this in more detail.
Hoping this article has been helpful to you!
