By the greatest chance, I chose to study the automatic processing of natural language, or Natural Language Processing in English. This is an area of research that is quite old and has made a good one since our computers are powerful enough to process our data. So this is something that concerns you, because with the NLP you can communicate with a Chat-Bot or your voice assistant.
Here is a short video that shows you in detail this job:
Our guest of the day
Busy position: Natural Language Processing student
Education level: Bachelor
Linkedin: Auélien Levecq
FingerInTheNet: Why did you choose this profession?
Aurélien: The fact that there was no exam to do these studies was an asset. Nevertheless I wanted to study computer science. With the NLP, in the end, I code programs. These are not programs for applications or others, but programs that help them.
FingerInTheNet: How did you learn this trade?
Aurélien: The theory was learned at university and the practice is good by myself, because you have to try and analyze whether it's better by doing it like this or like that. It is not a very scientific approach, but hey. I also learned a lot by working in parallel with my studies in different companies.
FingerInTheNet: What do you need to do every day in your work?
Aurélien: I do search engines, document/word classifiers or analyze the behavior of words in texts. The texts are very large (several GO). In order to do this the very first thing is to count the words. Then make sense of what we want to do. If you want to know what word comes most often after "hello" is just count all the words that come after "hello" is to divide the number of times that appear each word to have a statistic. You can also do kind of things to do translations. For example if the phrase "Das ist ein schons Auto" has been translated in 95% of cases by "It's a beautiful car" is indeed it can be said that it is the most plausible translation.
FingerInTheNet: What is your level of study? Did you pass any certifications?
Aurélien: I have a license, no certification. It's really not much… In a few years I plan to do my master's degree.
FingerInTheNet: Why are you so passionate about this job?
Aurélien: Because is good in the field of information and telecommunications technologies do not last, and this forces me to go to congresses, to read scientific publications, to discuss in order to be able to find the best solution to my projects in my work. Sometimes the best is not the most complicated or the newest!
FingerInTheNet: Do you have any advice for students who would like to do your job?
Aurélien: Loving math and logic 🙂
FingerInTheNet: A Last Word to Finish
Aurélien: For everyone who has nothing to do with programming or the world of telecommunications, it would be nice to do math. It is now possible to make medical diagnoses without a doctor. Logistics centres are managed on their own, cars/trucks will drive themselves. So, get some math done or you're going to end up unemployed. Laughing out loud
