The Olympiads of the trades: discovering the competition of computer networks!
Our guest of the day
– Network Engineer – Consultant at CNS Communications
– Technical Coach – Mental at WORLDSKILLS France for the "Computer Systems and Network Administration" business
Level of study:
– BTS It services to Organisations (Option SISR) alternating at PROMEO Formation in Beauvais.
– Degree in Computer Engineering – Networks alternating with the CNAM in partnership with ITII – PROMEO in Beauvais.
What are the Trades Olympiads?
Created in 1950, the Trades Olympiads (or "WorldSkills" under its international name) are for trades what the Olympics. are for sport: a competition that competes against the best competitors in each category!
There are about fifty trades (food, service, construction, new technologies, etc.) and the competition takes place in 3 stages: first the regional selections, then the national finals in which the best of each profession are selected to join the French teams that will compete in the world and/or European finals in order to win a medal!
These finals are held every 2 years in a country that is a member of the WorldSkills committee (composed of 80 countries around the world). The next ones will take place in Kazan for the world level and Graz for the European level.
How did you get to know this competition?
I discovered this competition when I was studying BTS S.I.O. at PROMEO Formation in Beauvais 6 years ago. My network trainer Philippe BAUCHEREL was then a coach for the "Computer Systems and Networks Administration" trade and encouraged me to participate. From then on he took me under his wing and trained me for the competition.
From there, I took the steps one by one. First by being champion of Picardy in 2014, then champion of France in 2015. I then joined the French team to participate in the World Finals in Sao Paulo (coached by the professional expert Benjamin CALLAR, former candidate in Calgary in 2009) the same year i finished in the TOP 10 and obtained a medal of excellence ( medal awarded to competitors with a very high score, but not enough to be on the podium).
Subsequently, I was selected to participate in the European finals in Gothenburg in 2016 (which take place in pairs) with the vice-champion of France Anthony LEBARBANCHON and together we won the first and only gold medal of the trade to date ( always coached by Benjamin CALLAR, the Trades expert).
What is the process for registering?
Anyone under the age of 23 in the year of the world competition can register for the regional selections on the WorldSkills France website (for now, registrations will not open until the end of 2019 for the next competitions).
How does the competition go?
The regional selections take place over 2 days, the national finals – European over 3 days and finally the world finals over 4 days.
In terms of our "Computer Systems and Networks Administration" business, the global challenges are:
Module A: Creating a Linux (Debian) infrastructure in 5 hours.
Module B: Creating a Windows infrastructure (10 – 2016) in 5 hours.
Module C: Creating a Cisco infrastructure (Router, Switch, Firewall ASA, ToIP, etc.) in 5 hours.
Module D: Troubleshooting Event (resolution of 10 tickets in 2 hours on an infrastructure comprising all technologies) – cisco Packet Tracer speed module.
The global and European level brings together all the most complex technologies of our business.
Do you have the right to the internet or documentation to help you?
No communication with the outside world during the trials.
How do you prepare for a competition?
With the constraints outlined above, the preparation is very cumbersome… This requires a ready 2 years of training (at a rate of 25 to 50 hours per week every night and weekend) to reach the world level – European.
The skills required are technical, of course, but not that… This is a competition in which only the BEST wins. It therefore requires very large capacities of endurance, mental, rigor, surpassing oneself, managing the unexpected and many others… Moreover, when the candidates at the start are selected, one does not look at the technical skills (which can easily be transmitted) but the abilities specific to the personality of the individual.
I could see you went from competitor to Coach, can you tell us a little more?
Indeed, I have always had in me the fiber of coaching and broadcasting. Even before my competitive career had ended, I asked my former coach Philippe BAUCHEREL if I could take over as Technical Coach – Mental Referent of the Hauts-de-France region and he accepted.
From Then on March 2016, I took under my wing a young competitor of the CFA of PROMEO, Aurélien BRUNO, whom I trained and who rose (like me) to reach the world finals in Abu Dhabi in 2017 where he achieved the same result me (TOP 10 and Medal of Excellence).
Then I invited him to support me in my role as coach and together we selected and coached 3 young people from the CFA of PROMEO. One of them, Baptiste GEDALGE, won the regional selections and we trained him again and again for 13 months for the sole purpose of winning the national finals.
Two weeks ago, after 3 days of fierce competition as the competition was present, Baptiste won the gold medal, the 3rd in a row for the Hauts-de-France region, the 5th of the CFA of Promeo since 2007.
He is now e-selection to join the French team that will fly to Kazan in August 2019 to hopefully win the first world medal in our profession!
One last word for our readers?
No matter where you come from, no matter your starting technical level, if you are of the right age, you are passionate about your job, you have the opportunity to participate in the Trades Olympiad, don't hesitate one Ms…
Whether it was Baptiste, Aurélien or myself, at first we didn't even imagine passing the regional selections… And today we 3 we have 3 French championship titles, 2 world medals of excellence, a European gold medal and perhaps the first world title to come…
Only your motivation and determination matter. Success is a choice and it is up to you and you alone.
As a friend of mine said: You are not born a champion, you become a champion.
